Data, Models and Human–AI Coevolution: how algorithms and people shape each other, and how to steer this process towards collective wellbeing.
Four days of lectures, followed by the project presentations
SoBigData RI and Project challenges
Introduction to the SoBigData Research Infrastructure and the SoBigData Lab, presentation of the project challenges and formation of the working groups.
Human–AI Coevolution and Interaction
How people and AI systems influence each other: from interpretability methods to interpretable models, human–AI coevolution, the human in the loop and human–AI interaction.
Human Control, Explainability and Data Governance
Meaningful human control over autonomous systems, humans and AI, explainability and the governance of personal and non-personal data.
Policies, Data and Society
Policies and data, data representation, social science data archives and the monitoring of electoral democracy.
The Summer School provides a unique interdisciplinary mixture where participants can explore state-of-the-art methods in data analysis, modelling and artificial intelligence applied to complex social systems. Lectures by experts take place in the morning, while the afternoon is dedicated to group work on project challenges, guided by dedicated tutors. Projects are presented on the last day and evaluated by a panel of experts.
Expert-led lectures will guide attendees through the empirical analysis of coevolution patterns on online platforms, the computational modelling of socio-technical mechanisms, and the design of interventions and algorithms that reconcile individual goals with collective wellbeing.
WHERE
Nested in the gulf of Baratti on the “Etruscan Coast” in Tuscany (Italy), Poggio all’Agnello is a fully equipped resort that will host the 2027 edition of the SoBigData Summer school.
Registration & Deadline
Early registration until 30 April 2027.
Late registration between 1 May 2027 and 31 May 2027 will have an additional cost.
AIM OF THE SCHOOL
The growing integration of artificial intelligence into online platforms is turning algorithms into active, and far from neutral, mediators of human experience, capable of amplifying phenomena such as polarization, bias and inequality. To understand how these collective dynamics emerge, a new line of research is taking shape around the concept of human–AI coevolution: an iterative process in which human choices feed algorithms and, in turn, algorithms steer and structure human choices.
The SoBigData Summer School will explore the main aspects of this research area: the empirical analysis of coevolution patterns on online platforms; the theoretical and computational modelling of the underlying socio-technical mechanisms; and the study of possible interventions and the design of algorithms able to reconcile users' individual goals with collective wellbeing. The program combines at least 20 hours of lectures by national and international experts with a substantial component of project work in multidisciplinary groups. Projects are driven by challenges proposed by researchers and domain experts, developed with the support of dedicated tutors, and presented on the final day to a panel of experts. The school leverages the tools and resources of the SoBigData Research Infrastructure.
